Gold Plating
Gold Plating
Gold plating is a beautiful way to give your jewellery a new life.
At Lilja Björk Jewellery, we offer 18K gold plating and rhodium plating for older jewellery pieces. This service can be used for jewellery that has lost its original plating, as well as pieces that have never been plated before.
Gold plating involves applying a thin layer of gold onto the surface of the jewellery. The result is a warm, luxurious and elegant finish that can refresh the look of a piece you already love.
We believe in taking care of what already exists. Instead of replacing jewellery that has become worn, faded or less shiny over time, gold plating can be a simple and beautiful way to make it feel new again.
What kind of jewellery can be plated?
The jewellery must be made of a suitable metal, such as:
925 sterling silver
silver
copper
brass
precious metal
We cannot gold plate or rhodium plate jewellery made of steel.
If you are not sure what metal your jewellery is made from, you are welcome to send us a photo by email at info@lbj.is, or bring the piece to our store and workshop.
How does gold plating work?
Before the plating process begins, the jewellery is carefully cleaned and prepared. This is an important step, as the surface needs to be free from dirt, oils and residue before the gold can bond properly to the piece.
The jewellery is then placed in a plating solution, where a thin layer of gold is applied to the surface using an electric current. This creates a fresh gold finish and gives the jewellery a renewed look.
Gold plating can enhance the appearance of silver jewellery and add warmth, colour and shine. It is a lovely option if you want to refresh an older piece, change the look of a silver item, or bring new life to a jewellery piece that has sentimental value.
Gold plating for LBJ jewellery
If you have a piece of Lilja Björk Jewellery that you would like to have replated, please contact us at info@lbj.is or visit us in store.
Prices are lower for LBJ jewellery, as we want to encourage our customers to take care of their pieces and give them a new life instead of replacing them.
If your LBJ jewellery also needs a repair, please contact us and we will let you know what is possible.
Gold plating for other jewellery
We also offer gold plating for jewellery from other brands, as long as the piece is suitable for plating.
Please note that not every piece can be plated. The final result depends on the metal, the condition of the jewellery and how the piece has been made.
If you are unsure, send us a photo of your jewellery at info@lbj.is and we will guide you.

How to send or bring in your jewellery
You can bring your jewellery to our store and workshop in Reykjavík.
You can also choose a shipping option at checkout. If you choose Dropp shipping, we will send you a Dropp label that can be used to send the jewellery to the LBJ workshop. Once the gold plating is finished, we will send the finished jewellery back to you.
If you choose standard shipping at checkout and would like to bring the jewellery to our workshop yourself, we will arrange a suitable time with you.
How long does gold plating last?
Gold plating will naturally wear off over time. This is normal.
How long it lasts depends on how often the jewellery is worn, how it is cared for, and where on the body the piece is worn. Rings usually wear faster than necklaces or earrings because they are exposed to more contact, water and friction.
To keep your gold-plated jewellery looking beautiful for as long as possible, we recommend keeping it away from:
water
steam
perfume
lotions
cleaning products
hand sanitiser
harsh chemicals
We also recommend storing your jewellery in a dry, dark place when you are not wearing it.
Give your jewellery a new life
Jewellery can hold memories, meaning and personal history. Gold plating is a simple way to refresh a piece you already care about and make it wearable again.
Be sustainable and give your jewellery a new life.
